Your SEO Questions Answered

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search engine optimisation is the process of optimising a webpage for search engines such as Google. Optimisation involves many factors. The most important factors, however, are website performance, content quality and structure, and authority.

What does a Search Engine Optimisation Specialist do?

A search engine optimisation specialist’s role involves three fundamental areas – research, analysis and application. A SEO specialist will start by researching the target market to generate a list of target keyword groups, as well as research the sites which are current ranking for those keywords in order to establish a benchmark of optimisation criteria. Afterwards, the target website will be analysed and compared against the benchmark criteria so that a clear plan of action can be developed. Finally, in the application stage, the plan of action will be executed on the target site. A search engine optimisation specialist will also track (monitor) rankings and provide reporting.

Should I use SEO or Paid Ads?

There are pros and cons for both paid ads and SEO. Ideally, if a business has cashflow issues, using paid ads will get the phone ringing from day one. SEO is great for businesses that have a limited capacity to scale as they can eventually acheive maximum capacity with zero ad cost. But if a business has no limit on capacity, and has a healthy cashflow already, doing both SEO and paid ads is the way to go.

How can I identify a good SEO agency?

A SEO agency is only as good as the person doing the SEO work. For this reason, it’s better to go with a SEO agency run by an owner-operator who is a technical SEO specialist. Avoid agencies that try to sell a complete suite of digital services because it’s likely they don’t specialise in anything other than making sales.

How much do I need to pay for SEO?

Comparing SEO pricing is difficult because there is any number of things that can be included in an SEO campaign. Typically costs could range from $750-$2000 a month per campaign. Campaigns typically last for about 6-9 months, but many businesses choose to continue. Some larger businesses are running more than one campaign each month.

How can I save money on SEO?

It’s helpful to understand what work is once-off and what work is required on an on-going basis. Some SEO tasks can be completed in the first few weeks of an SEO project and do not require on-going work. You can often save money by paying up front for the once-off tasks to be completed, then negotiate a lower on-going montly payment for services which are required on a month-to-month basis.

What is a technical SEO specialist?

A technical SEO specialist uses a technical approach to SEO as opposed to a holistic approach typically used by staff at digital agencies. A technical SEO specialist will do a comprehensive SEO analysis of hundreds of rankings factors using a variety of tools, then interpret that data to achieve rankings. The holistic approach, on the other hand, takes action based on a pre-defined task list generated from a basic understanding of core SEO principles.

How is SEO pricing calculated?

Each SEO agency makes their own pricing models. Some agencies base their pricing off the value of the outcomes expected. Others base their pricing on the actual work that is involved. There are strong arguments for both methods of pricing. Since the SEO industry is largely unregulated, it’s important that business owners feel they can trust that the person doing the work for them is honest and fair.

Is SEO guaranteed to work?

In most cases SEO will work to some degree. But specific rankings cannot be guaranteed. Even following Google’s guidelines perfectly will not result in perfect rankings. But SEO done properly will always be more beneficial to a business than no SEO being done at all. For this reason, getting SEO done by a reputable provider, even just the foundation work, is important.

How long does SEO take to work?

For an established site, on-page SEO changes can affect rankings in the first 24 hours of the work being completed. Off-page SEO can take 3 months or so to start seeing the effect, and will continue to improve rankings over a 6-12 month period. It is really hard to say as there are many factors involved. Brand new sites and domains can take a bit longer.
