It can take anywhere from 3-12 months to rank on page 1 - depending on the competition. Some have ranked much faster than 3 months even, but this is rare in legitimate, revenue producing markets. Another thing to consider is that your competitors will most likely also be investing in SEO as they see you overtake their rankings, so marketing should be maintained and built on regularly in order to stay on top. We usually say 6-9 months.
We use a combination of on-page SEO and off-page SEO. See our Pricing page for more details.
We follow a standard pricing model so that we charge according to the time, effort and resources required to get results - not according to the industry.
All SEO tasks can be categorised into two main areas: On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO. You will most likely need both of these done properly in order to increase your rankings. However, we have decided on a standardised pricing model which is both affordable and more flexible than traditional SEO pricing models.
We will need to do a quote for you based on your needs. The information below helps break down the work involved so you know what you are being quoted for.
The essence of on-page SEO is covered by two categories: Structure and User-Experience.
At Webgator, we consider this a priority. So when we evaluate your site, we will be looking at the current structure and performance of your website and estimate how much work will be required to get your website humming online. It's extremely unlikely that you will rank on Pg 1 only using On-Page optimisation. However, it can be impossible to rank without it.
To rank well you need to be seen as an authority in your industry. This authority is built through association with online properties which search engines consider high-authority and trustworthy.
To build this authority for your website we need to do a backlinking campaign. The good thing is that by using various tools we can estimate the level of authority that your competition have. Using this information we can provide a few different options for your to consider.
The best way to find out how much SEO will cost for your website is by filling out our Quote Form.
Common Questions about SEO
What is SEO?SEO stands for 'Search Engine Optimisation'. Technically it refers to optimising a website or webpage for selected keywords. However, it is generally accepted that SEO is the process of increasing a site's rankings in Google and other search engines for selected keywords. To increase rankings involves both website optimisation, commonly referred to as 'on-page optimisation', and link building which is called 'off-page optimisation'.
How Much does SEO Cost?SEO costs are usually based on the competition level of the keywords that need to be promoted. The on-page optimisation is usually done up-front, while the off-page SEO is done on an on-going basis. The off-page SEO is ultimately just link building. This can be a very time-consuming task to do properly, hence the bulk of the cost goes towards labour.
How Long Does it Take to Rank? This depends on a number of factors. So that realistic expectations can be set, plan for the SEO to take 9 months to get your site to Page 1 of Google. Last year we would have said 6 months, but things are taking longer to kick in these days. Less competitive terms are rank within hours, days, weeks or just a few months depending on the term. But any competitive term can take 9 months or more.
How Much do Backlinks Cost? There are many types of backlinks. Some are valued due to the amount of time it takes a staff member to acquire the links and create any content, if needed. Other links are links the SEO agency will have to pay for, so that cost needs to be factored into the budget. Considering most SEO agencies bill at around $150 per hour, a basic link would be worth around $50. Most powerful links would be worth $100-$500 each. Backlinks from major online websites like Forbes, Huffington Post, Inc.com, Entrepreneur and others can valued between $700-$2000 each. Backlinking involves so much more than throwing money or content at something. Many factors are taken into consideration and much is spent getting it right. Naturally, due to the high-cost of backlinking, you will find most SEO companies will end up making many more links than the value of what they are invoicing their clients. Keep in mind that there are many spammy and automated forms of backlinking which we do not condone that are much cheaper than the values listed above. So if an SEO company is charging quoting $200 a month for an SEO campaign, it makes you wonder what they are really doing.
What are Keywords?engine optimisation agency in Brisbane, they could search for 'SEO Brisbane', 'Brisbane SEO company', 'SEO agency Brisbane' or something similar. Those search terms are examples of important keywords that SEO agencies like Webgator would want to be ranked for.
Can I Do SEO Myself?Sure you can. Many business owners do. Learning SEO is like learning any other trade. But most business owners would prefer to stick to what they do best instead of spending the time learning and doing SEO. Search engine optimisation requires a big time investment, and strategic know-how to make sure everything is orchestrated properly.
Why is SEO an On-Going Cost?SEO isn't something that is simply 'installed'. After the initial optimisation of a website, on-going link building is required. Technically you could stop the SEO campaign when your site ranks in the top 10 for your main search terms. However, on-going linking will help your site continue to gain rankings for related keywords and will help maintain your current rankings. If SEO is stopped, naturally the rankings will start to drop over time.
How Many Backlinks do I Need?If SEO were as simple as sending backlinks, the agencies with the biggest budget would rank #1 everywhere. This is not the case. Webgator ranked #1 for 'SEO Brisbane' within just 6 months of launching - outranking agencies that were bringing in millions each year. Different tools can be used to reverse-engineer the backlink profile of competitors' website. However, due to Google zoo of algorithm updates (Panda, Penguin, Possum, Hummingbird, Fred), along with old sites that are grandfathered in, it can be hard to determine how many links will be needed. It's not just the links which are important either - the anchor text used in the links is also very important. This is another reason why SEO is an on-going process. Typically, what most ethical SEO agencies do is continue linking until results are achieved.
Can I meet with you in person? We manage the SEO campaigns of businesses all around Australia. Here is a list of locations we are currently servicing. However, we can manage an SEO campaign regardless of where the business is - even if it's overseas. Many of our meetings happen over the phone, but we may be able to arrange a time to meet with you in person. Currently we are only meeting clients in person if they are located in Brisbane. However, if it is a big project we can try to arrange something. We don't conduct client meetings at our Head Office generally.
What are Rankings? The term 'rankings' refers to the position where a web page is located in search engines like Google for select keywords. Most internet traffic will go to one of the web pages positioned on page 1 of the search engine result pages (referred to as the 'SERPs'). This means all businesses compete for one of the positions on Pg 1 of Google.
Which is the Best SEO Company?A sign of a good SEO company is one that either has a good reputation through word-of-mouth referrals or an agency which is ranked on Pg 1 of Google in any major city for 'SEO City Name'. We hold a number of other SEO agencies in high regard even though they aren't on Pg 1. Having considered that, if an SEO provider can get results for themseleves, then obviously they have the ability to get results for other businesses too. It is important, however, to consider a company's reputation before choosing them.
When is the Best Time to Start SEO?If you have a domain or website, it may be better to leave the SEO until the site or domain is at least 6 months old. Google rarely takes brand new sites or domains seriously. However during these early stages, on-page SEO can be done. However, this would typically just be once-off work. Foundation links should also be created during this time. These would include links from social profiles (Facebook, Twitter, G+) etc. It is also fine to create links from business directories. There is no problem with starting a fully-fledged SEO campaign on a brand new site, however just prepared for it to take a bit longer to rank that it would an older site. Considering SEO is quite an investment, starting at the right time will help you see results with the minimum spend.
Where can I Get Backlinks? You can get backlinks from business directories, blogging platforms (such as WordPress, Blogger, etc), Social Media sites, and by asking other website owners for a link. Some website owners allow backlinks in exchange for high-quality content for their site, or simply for money. Some sites allow sponsorship links, which are fine too. Just remember that building backlinks is fraught with danger. Getting a website penalised is all too easy these days, and many times this is as a direct result from poorly built backlinks. That is why SEO should be done by a specialist - just like any other trade. Fixing a penalised website can be very expensive.
The SEO Buyer's Guide
#1 Look out for cookie-cutter search engine optimisation prices.
That includes any company which quotes blanket prices or very low prices like $499 or $599 a month. They just don't understand business very well. You know, there are no 2 businesses alike, and each business has its own set of financial goals it would like to achieve. A local business in a suburban area would never be charged as much as a major state-wide or nation-wide company.
Stop and think about it. There's no way an SEO agency will be able to earn a business an extra $1 million or even $25, 000 a month by charging $125 a week for SEO. That's actually less than what a teenager holding a pizza sign gets part-time!
#2 Make sure they've had experience ranking for difficult, revenue producing keywords.
Some SEO agencies will charge you to rank for your own business name or some obscure keywords which people aren’t searching for. Having a flash sign in the middle of the desert isn’t going to bring you revenue! Your business needs to be ranked on page 1 of Google for major revenue generating search terms – and preferably in the top 3. No-one can safely guarantee position #1 rankings, but getting your business consistently at the top of search results is where the money is.
#3 Just because someone knows computers, doesn't mean they know search engine optimisation.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that a web development team or IT guy knows anything about SEO. The thing is that the IT guys care about job security and wouldn't dare tell you they don't know how to get the job done. Because if they did know how to do SEO properly, your website would ALREADY be ranked well in Google and generating the traffic and revenue you desire. Trying to do this in-house could result in a huge waste of money. Web designing is a great talent. But a pretty website isn't going to bring you traffic. Web designers are architects. Just because someone is used to building a hospital, doesn't mean you would want that same person to be doing surgery on the patients! Almost all web design today has come down to drag-and-drop editors. So ask yourself, does that qualify them as being search engine optimisation experts?
#4 Make sure that Search engine optimisation, digital marketing, or business consulting is their full-time occupation.
There are no regulations regarding who can do SEO and many of the people who say they can do it have full-time jobs elsewhere and use the SEO work to supplement their income. Maybe they bought some $49 course in a box that makes them think they are an expert, or they've read one too many get rich online blogs. If they really knew SEO, they would be making enough money on their own without needing to take a job to supplement their income.
#5 Make sure that none of the work done on your website is outsourced to a 3rd party.
Make sure that an actual employee of their company is going to be doing the Search Engine Optimisation on your business website. Most SEO firms outsource their work to 3rd parties. I know this because SEO agencies around the world outsource their work so that their own business model is scalable. The cost of hiring an employee in Australia is about $60K a year, whereas an employee in some third world country only costs about $3K per year. The problem with this is that the larger an agency becomes, the harder it is for them to manage the quality of work produced by their offshore counterparts. It's always good to know who's doing work on your website so you know who is accountable. And having a non-native English speaker doing work on your site can cause a whole range of other problems for your business.
Well, that about wraps it up. We hope you were able to benefit from the guidelines about how to choose the best company to do search engine optimisation to your website.
